I know you are raring to see Sex and the City 2.
But would you consider watching “Noy, the Movie”?
Nope, this movie is not about Noynoy Aquino, the seemingly-president elect (from the recent elections). The movie is about Noy Agapito, a young man who posed as a journalist commissioned to make a documentary on the campaign trail of his namesake, Noynoy Aquino.
The movie will feature actual documentary footages from the campaign, mixed with real scenes from the movie.
Read all about the movie here.
The movie stars one of my favorite Filipino actors (and one of the most credible actors of today) Coco Martin. Aside from the fact that Coco Martin is cute (that’s given already) — this dude is really an actor’s actor. He is really good, trumping all that pretty boy hunks who litter Pinoy showbiz with his acting capabilities. For one, he is not the person to act cute, a trait that seems to be common among Filipino young actors.
Lending credible support is Cherry Pie Picache (she earned the distinction of being one of the go-to character actresses of today for roles that required real actresses and not cardboard cut-outs) and Joem Bascon (who thankfully outgrew his supposed similarity to Piolo Pascual).
This movie seemed promising — but I kinda think that for a Pinoy movie to look pang-award, it’s location has to be some slum area to fully show the misery of the urban poor (a shot of stinking garbage plus the combination of putrid river water is a plus too). From what I can remember, our pang-festival movies has 3 requirements to be considered art house classics: 1) presence of sex workers/macho dancers/ gay characters/ sex; 2) set in the slums 3) must have a character that is illiterate or depressingly poor.
But then again when Insiang was shown years and years ago and blew everyone away on how great Pinoy movies can be, no one was complaining.
I wish I could catch this when it’s finally shown on local theaters. Much better if more people will see this, and maybe steer away from the formulaic comedy movies (or romance movies) that seemed to litter Pinoy cinema.
